East-Central Korean Schools Association celebrates the 580th Hangeul Day

Love for Hangeul expressed in writing and art—a joyful cultural gathering with traditional games

The East-Central regional association of Korean schools (chair: 이진윤) held an event marking the 580th Hangeul Day at Peace Valley Park on October 3. With students, teachers, and parents from local Korean schools taking part, the gathering provided an opportunity to appreciate Hangeul and enjoy Korean culture through learning and exchange.

Registration began at 9:30 a.m., followed by an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. led by moderator 지선영. From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., students participated in writing, Hangeul design, and drawing competitions according to their grade and age. Regional association officers and student volunteers helped throughout the event.

Writing contestants reflected on Hangeul and their appreciation for teachers under the themes ‘If Hangeul Did Not Exist’ and ‘A Letter to King Sejong.’ Hangeul design entrants used the Korean words for ‘Mugunghwa’ (rose of Sharon), ‘Arirang,’ ‘Korean Textbook,’ and ‘My Favorite Korean Word’ to express the beauty of the language. In the drawing competition, children put their imagination and hopes onto paper under the themes ‘The World Drawn in Hangeul’ and ‘Dreams.’

The judges’ dedication also contributed to the event. The writing competition was judged by Sally Kim, author of ‘Memories Are a Gift from Mom’ and ‘The Day the Heart’s Flowers Bloom,’ and a recipient of the Korean-American Poetry Association’s newcomer literary award. The drawing and Hangeul design entries were judged by 황의정 (June K. Kim), a painter, ceramic artist, and art educator. The two judges skipped lunch as they carefully reviewed the students’ works one by one.

Traditional games followed lunch. Students enjoyed tuho (arrow tossing), sinbal deonjigi (shoe throwing), ttakji (folded-paper tile flipping), and jegichagi (shuttlecock kicking). Before the awards ceremony, a balloon treasure hunt drew enthusiastic responses. Students found hidden notes around the park and exchanged them for gifts.

The largest supporting organization was the Overseas Koreans Agency, which helped make the event possible for the next generation learning Hangeul and Korean culture. Warm support also came from the Philadelphia community. Grace Senior Center, 유성진 physical therapy, Upper Darby H Mart, Best Ride, and 5가 떡집 helped provide plentiful snacks and drinks. The efforts of teachers, parents, volunteers, and supporters made the Hangeul Day celebration even richer.

In the competitions, 정해나 of 필라한인천주교 한국학교 received the grand prize and Philadelphia consular office award for writing, and 권지민 of 몽고메리 한국학교 received the corresponding award for Hangeul design. 조영민 of 말모이 한국학교 received the grand prize in drawing.

Local News · Camden officially proclaims Korean Heritage Day; first Korean flag raising in South Jersey

Organized by the Korean American Association of Southern New Jersey: mayoral proclamation and City Council resolution presented; Korean War veterans honored.

The 2026 Korean Heritage Day celebration and Korean national flag-raising ceremony, organized by the Korean American Association of Southern New Jersey (president 정태숙) and supported by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in New York, took place successfully at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 9, at Roosevelt Plaza outside Camden City Hall in New Jersey.

This historic event marked the first official raising of the Korean flag in Camden and the surrounding South Jersey region. It increased pride in the Korean community and provided an opportunity to introduce Korean history and cultural identity to mainstream American society.

Attendees included Camden Mayor Victor Carstarphen, City Council President Angel Fuentes, Camden County officials and council members, representatives of the Korean Consulate General in New York, Korean War veterans and members of local Korean communities.

The ceremony, moderated by the association’s 이주향 director, began with an opening announcement, the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of the Korean national anthem, followed by welcoming remarks and congratulatory addresses from major guests.

Mayor Victor Carstarphen presented an official proclamation commemorating Korean Heritage Day to association president 정태숙, vice president 이승아 and senior vice president 이호수. The proclamation recognized the value of Korean culture and honored the Korean community’s role in local development. Continued on page 31.

Local News · Korean Heritage Day in Camden, continued

The mayoral proclamation honored the Korean community’s role and contributions. City Council President Angel Fuentes also presented a resolution commemorating Korean Heritage Day and expressed support for continued friendship, cooperation and cultural exchange with the Korean community.

The ceremony included a solemn Korean War memorial and wreath-laying ceremony for veterans who devoted themselves to freedom and peace during the war. Participants laid flowers in honor of their noble sacrifices and dedication, reaffirming the longstanding friendship and alliance between Korea and the United States.

During the flag-raising that followed, participants watched the historic moment when the Korean flag rose on Camden’s official City Hall flagpole, sharing pride and emotion as Koreans.

After the official commemoration, a varied program featured traditional Korean fan dancing, cultural experiences, traditional games and an introduction to Korean food. Local residents and people from different cultural backgrounds encountered Korean traditional culture firsthand while communicating and exchanging with one another.

The event went beyond a simple ceremony: it introduced Korean history and culture to local American society and created a setting for cultural exchange, bringing residents of different backgrounds together through understanding and respect.

Association president 정태숙 described the event as a meaningful new milestone in the history of South Jersey’s Korean community. She said the association would continue introducing Korea’s outstanding culture and traditions to local society and undertaking activities to instill pride in the next generation.

The association plans to build a closer working relationship with Camden through the event, expanding joint projects and exchanges in culture, education and community service. The first official Korean flag raising in South Jersey and the Korean Heritage Day celebration are viewed as a new starting point that increases the community’s standing while helping the Korean community and Camden deepen cultural understanding, friendship and shared development.

2026 Navy Scholarship Applications

The Philadelphia Korean Navy veterans’ association is recruiting 2026 scholarship applicants and welcomes applications from students in Philadelphia and nearby areas.

Two students will be selected. Each scholarship is $500.

Eligibility and required documents: high school senior (12th grade); scholarship application; transcript; personal statement; recommendation letter; essay.

Transcripts and recommendation letters must be sent directly by the school. A recommendation letter is accepted only from a teacher at the applicant’s current school or a teacher from the applicant’s middle school.

The essay should focus on the intended college major, explaining why the applicant chose that field and the planned study of major-related or associated subjects during four years of college.

Application deadline: November 7. Results announced: November 15.
